Jen Fisher is a Mum who knows first-hand just how vulnerable parents of newborn babies can feel. Jen, who runs Mini First Aid East Sussex, has a beautiful 2 year old daughter called Meredith. When Meredith was just a few hours old, she became extremely poorly with hypothermia. In her own words, Jen talks about what happened:

“Within hours of being born, my daughter Meredith became gravely unwell. At first, no one noticed because the signs are so different in a newborn to what we would expect to see in an adult. We had only been on the postnatal ward for about an hour, when my daughter was admitted to special care for hypothermia. I was left thinking ‘how did I not realise’?

I have never felt so helpless, terrified and out of control. Fortunately, Meredith is now a happy 2 year old old but I feel acutely aware that it could have been so different. Many people think this would not happen to them, but it can and does. I realised then, that knowing first aid is so important. You really can save a child’s life if you know what to do and act quickly.”

Jen felt frustrated that first aid classes were not easy accessible in her local area. So she took matters into her own hands and set up Mini First Aid East Sussex!

In addition to holding a full paediatric first aid qualification, Jen has a wealth of experience supporting local families due to her experience in Children’s Services, Youth Work and Adult Social Care. Jen wants to empower parents and carers so they know what to do in a variety of first aid situations. She says:

“First Aid is such an important skill. It used to be available through some children’s centres but unfortunately this does not happen any longer. I was sent home with this tiny, precious newborn bundle and even with a special care baby we only had a few minutes of basic first aid information to satisfy the requirements for discharge. I want to give parents and carers the skills and confidence they need so they do not feel alone and vulnerable with a newborn baby at home.”
